40mm PCB CRI90 High-Output LED Strip for Linear Lighting

Project Overview

A European lighting manufacturer contacted HST Light looking for a high-output LED strip solution for a linear lighting application.
The customer had several clear technical requirements:
  • DC24V
  • 40mm wide PCB
  • CRI Ra90 minimum
  • 4000K
  • High luminous output
  • Short cutting length
  • Sample testing before moving forward
The main challenge was to achieve high lumen output while keeping the required CRI, PCB width and practical cutting distance.

Customer Requirements

The customer was not looking for a standard LED strip.
Their main concerns were:
  • Whether a 40mm PCB could be customized
  • Whether the strip could maintain CRI Ra90
  • What the minimum cutting length would be
  • Whether samples were available for testing
  • Which specification would offer the best balance between brightness, power and cost
Based on these requirements, HST Light prepared two technical options for evaluation.

Solution 1: 540 LEDs/m High-Efficiency LED Strip

The first option focused on achieving strong brightness while maintaining a more balanced power level.

Key Specifications

  • Voltage: DC24V
  • LED Type: SMD2835
  • LED Density: 540 LEDs/m
  • PCB Width: 40mm
  • Power: 23W/m
  • Luminous Flux: Approx. 4300 lm/m
  • CCT: 4000K
  • CRI: Ra90
  • IP Rating: IP20
  • Cutting Length: Approx. 16.6mm
  • Cable: Both ends with cables
  • Standard Packing: 5m/reel
This version is suitable for applications that require high brightness but still need to control power consumption and thermal load.

Solution 2: 810 LEDs/m Ultra-High Output LED Strip

For applications requiring higher illumination and a shorter cutting unit, we also developed a higher-density version.

Key Specifications

  • Voltage: DC24V
  • LED Type: SMD2835
  • LED Density: 810 LEDs/m
  • PCB Width: 40mm
  • Power: 35W/m
  • Luminous Flux: Approx. 6600 lm/m
  • CCT: 4000K
  • CRI: Ra90
  • IP Rating: IP20
  • Cutting Length: Approx. 11.1mm
  • Cable: Both ends with cables
  • Standard Packing: 5m/reel
This version provides significantly higher lumen output and allows more flexible cutting for applications with tighter dimensional requirements.

How We Helped the Customer Choose

Instead of simply providing two specifications, we compared the two options based on the customer’s actual priorities.

Choose 540 LEDs/m if the priority is:

  • Lower power consumption
  • Better balance between brightness and cost
  • Easier thermal management
  • High output without using the maximum power level

Choose 810 LEDs/m if the priority is:

  • Maximum lumen output
  • Shorter cutting distance
  • Higher illumination levels
  • More flexibility for short-section installation
For most linear lighting applications, the 540 LEDs/m version provides a practical balance between efficiency, output and power consumption.
For projects where maximum brightness is critical, the 810 LEDs/m version offers a stronger solution.

Why PCB Width Matters

A wider PCB is not only related to mechanical size.
For high-power LED strips, PCB width also affects:
  • Heat dissipation
  • Copper area
  • Current carrying capacity
  • Voltage stability
  • Long-term reliability
When power increases to 23W/m or even 35W/m, thermal management becomes especially important.
A properly designed aluminum profile and installation environment should therefore be considered together with the LED strip specification.

Why CRI90 Can Affect Luminous Efficiency

Higher CRI LEDs usually provide better color rendering, but compared with lower-CRI versions, luminous efficacy may be reduced.
That means a high-output CRI90 LED strip must be designed with a balance between:
  • LED efficiency
  • Power
  • Heat generation
  • PCB structure
  • Lumen output
  • Color quality
This is why HST Light does not recommend selecting LED density based on lumen output alone.
The complete system should be evaluated.

Sample Testing Before Production

For customized or high-output LED strip projects, sample testing is strongly recommended before mass production.
The customer can verify:
  • Actual brightness
  • Color temperature
  • CRI
  • Power consumption
  • Heat performance
  • Cutting flexibility
  • Installation compatibility
  • Aluminum profile matching
This helps reduce project risk before larger-volume purchasing.

Suitable Applications

This type of high-output LED strip can be used for:
  • Architectural linear lighting
  • Commercial lighting
  • Retail lighting
  • High-output aluminum profile lighting
  • Cabinet and display lighting
  • Custom luminaire production
  • Backlighting
  • Industrial lighting products
